Revise With Reasoning, Not Recall

Many trainees read too much and test themselves too little. Rereading notes, re-highlighting the same paragraphs, and working through familiar chapters can feel productive, but familiarity is not the same as mastery. It is entirely possible to recognise a fact on the page and still be unable to apply it under exam pressure, a few minutes later, in a slightly different form.

This is the core problem with passive revision, and it is the reason many candidates feel they "know the content" but still underperform on MRCPCH theory papers.

Why passive revision feels productive but isn't

Rereading creates a sense of fluency — the material feels familiar, so it feels learned. But recognition and retrieval are different cognitive processes. The exam does not ask "does this look familiar?" It asks you to retrieve the right knowledge, unprompted, and apply it to a scenario you have not seen before. If your revision method never requires retrieval without prompts, you are training the wrong skill.

What works better

The evidence on learning is consistent, and it points toward methods that feel more effortful than rereading, but produce far more durable knowledge.

Active recall. Instead of reading a topic and moving on, close the notes and try to reconstruct the key points from memory. The struggle to retrieve information is not a sign you are doing it wrong — it is the mechanism by which the knowledge becomes more durable.

Spaced repetition. Revisiting a topic after a gap, rather than repeatedly on the same day, strengthens retention far more efficiently. A topic revised once, then again a week later, then again a month later, is remembered better than the same topic revised three times in one sitting.

Question practice as a diagnostic tool. Questions are not simply an assessment of what you know. Used properly, they are one of the most efficient ways to discover what you don't know — which is far more useful information than confirming what you already do.

Reviewing wrong answers properly. Getting a question wrong and reading the explanation once is not the same as understanding why you got it wrong. The valuable step is asking whether the error was a knowledge gap, a misreading of the stem, or a reasoning error — because each of those needs a different fix.

How this looks in a real revision session

A simple, repeatable session might look like this: attempt a set of questions on a topic without notes open. Mark which ones you got wrong, and just as importantly, which ones you got right but were unsure about. For each of those, write one or two lines on why the correct answer is correct and why the alternatives are wrong — not just what the answer is. A week later, revisit the same topic briefly to check the reasoning has stuck.

This takes longer per topic than simply rereading a chapter. It also produces knowledge that survives contact with an exam question you haven't seen before, which rereading rarely does.

The "I knew this" trap

One of the most common patterns among trainees is recognising the correct answer after seeing it, and concluding they "basically knew it." This is a trap. Recognising a correct answer once it's in front of you and generating it yourself under exam conditions are different skills, and only one of them is tested in the exam. If you find yourself thinking "I knew that" after checking an answer, treat it as a prompt to test yourself on that exact topic again in a few days, cold, without hints.

  • Rereading notes repeatedly and mistaking familiarity for mastery
  • Doing large volumes of questions without reviewing why wrong answers were wrong
  • Treating a correct guess the same as a confident, reasoned answer
  • Revising a topic once and assuming it is "done," rather than revisiting it after a gap

Three actions to take this week

  1. Pick one topic you have already "revised" and test yourself on it cold, without notes, before rereading anything.
  2. For your next set of practice questions, write one sentence on why each wrong answer is wrong — not just why the right answer is right.
  3. Build a simple review schedule that brings topics back after a few days and again after a few weeks, rather than revising each topic once and moving on.

Revision should feel effortful, not smooth. If a study session feels easy, it is worth asking whether you are actually building retrievable knowledge, or simply making the material feel familiar. The exam will ask you to retrieve, not recognise — so that is what your revision should train.
